Today I share with you a song from one of my favorite CD’s, Zero Church by The Roches. While I’m not a religious person by any means, this album earned a permanent place in my CD collection with its honesty and simplicity.
The song “Anyway” is one of my favorites on the album. It is based on a poem that was supposedly written by Mother Theresa; although there’s no proof that she’s the actual author. It talks about forgiveness, kindness, and giving the world the best version of you. At a time when I thought I couldn’t sink any lower, this song helped raise my spirits…and is one of the few songs that I can say has changed my life.
Anyway
People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.
And if you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.
You’ll see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.
Come back every Tuesday for “The Bees Knees”, where I post the best quotes from my favorite movies, TV shows, songs, and books.
