This quote is taken from one of my favorite books, The Painted Drum. I read this book in college and fell in love with its messages about love, family, and tradition. Perhaps if I remember, I’ll talk more about it for the Friday section this week 🙂
“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either…for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself that you tasted as many as you could.”
Come back every Tuesday for “The Bees Knees”, where I post the best quotes from my favorite movies, TV shows, songs, and books.
Great quote. If the rest of the book is nearly this good, I’ll have to check it out.

I really loved the book. I read it in one of my native american classes and couldn’t put it down. It’s all about family, grieving, acceptance, and understanding.
