Crocheted Cell Phone Case

Well, about a month ago I decided it was high time to join the 21st century and get a smart phone.  After lots of research and talks with my younger siblings and cousins, I decided on a Samsung SII, and I LOVE it so far!

After dealing with a crappy phone that would just turn off for no apparent reason…or would alert me that I have text messages from no one, it is so nice to have a phone that actually works, and can help me when I’m lost, hungry, or bored!  🙂

And since this mini computer is now sloshing around my huge purse, I thought it safe to create some kind of cozy for it to allow for simple protection from my keys and the books I carry in my bag…thus this crochet cozy was born!

Made with Soft Red Heart Yarn and the colorful Celebrate Bon Bon Collection from Lion Brand, this cozy is so easy to make and creates a nice little home for my new phone.

You can easily make this for an iPhone or iPod, too…simply cast on enough stitches to measure the width of your device and crochet away until your piece is as tall as your gadget.

Crocheted Cell Phone Case

Materials:

  • 1 skein Red Heart Soft yarn in Wheat (or medium yarn of your choice-look for a #4 on the package)
  • 1 package Lion Brand Yarn Bon Bons (Celebrate collection)
  • 5mm (US H8) crochet hook (really any small crochet hook will work for this project)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Button

Directions:
This case is worked in 2 pieces and then sewn together to make a case…so make 2 of the following designs.

  1. Cast on 16 stitches.
  2. Single crochet in second chain from hook, and in each chain following (15 single crochets).  Chain 1.  Turn.
  3. Single crochet in second chain from hook, and in each chain following (15 single crochets).  Chain 1.  Turn.
  4. Begin a colored stripe by single crocheting in each chain across using one of the Bon Bons.  I found it easiest to carry my main color as I made my stripes, but you can easily cut it and weave in all your ends if that’s easiest for you.
  5. Repeat this pattern (main color, stripe, main color, stripe) until your cozy is as long as your phone (for my Samsung S2, I crocheted 25 rows total).  Be sure your last row is made with your main color.
  6. Bind off and weave in ends.
  7. Repeat this again to make the back cover of your cozy.
  8. Once both of your covers are made, you’re going to create a simple border by single crocheting around the entire piece with your main color.  Take one of your pieces and join your yarn in the lower right hand side of the piece.  Single crochet all the way around the piece to create a nice border.  Do the same to the other piece.  Bind off and weave in ends.
  9. To join your pieces, hold your 2 pieces together, right sides facing in, and join your yarn in the bottom right corner–be sure to go through both loops, the loop for the front piece and the loop for the back.  You can crochet the two pieces together by doing a single crochet all the way around, or you can slip stitch every stitch, which is what I did.  Just be sure to leave an opening for your phone to slide in!  To do a slip stitch join, insert your hook through both loops, yarn over, pull through both loops and the loop on your hook.  Repeat all the way around until the piece is joined together.  Bind off and weave in ends.  Turn piece right side out.
  10. To keep my phone secure, I added a button to the front of the cozy and attached a small loop to the back to go around the button.  You can also add a snap or just leave it as is.
  11. This cozy is also great for iPods, iPads, Tablets, eReaders, cameras, and much more.  Simply chain enough stitches to measure the width of your device and crochet until your piece is covered.
