Bird Box Book Review

Like The Boy Who Drew Monsters, Bird Box was another victim of my “Judging a Book By Its Cover” project. I was intrigued by the cover of this book and, since it looked like a short and easy read, I decided to give it a whirl…

A story that will chill you to the bone, Bird Box is a thriller unlike anything I’ve read before. It’s a story that will heighten your senses…FAIR WARNING – Do not read alone, before bed, or in the dark…unless you’re one of those crazy people who loves freaking yourself out for some weird reason.

So let’s dive in, shall we?

Something is outside. Something terrifying that must not be seen. One look at it and a person is driven to deadly violence, often resulting in gruesome suicide. No one knows what it is, where it came from, or what it looks like.

Five years after this tragedy began, there are a handful of scattered survivors still managing to hang on, including Malorie and her two young children. Shacked up in an abandoned house near the river, Malorie has dreamed of leaving her home behind and finding refuge with other survivors…and now that her children are old enough (THEY’RE 4!!), Malorie decides to flee for safety.

But the journey ahead is no cakewalk. The entity is still outside. People are still seeing it and being driven into madness…so Malorie and her children must travel 20 miles downriver in a rowboat – BLINDFOLDED – with nothing to rely on but what they hear.

Seamlessly interweaving past and present, Bird Box tells the story of a world gone mad. It’s a study in human intuition and what it takes to survive at a time when everything is working against you. Easily read in one sitting, Bird Box is further proof that sometimes it’s the things we can’t see that scare us the most.
