Summer Pasta Salad

Looking for a light and refreshing summer pasta salad that isn’t dripping in fat and mayo?  Well, look no further!

summer-pasta-salad

This tasty and bright Summer Pasta Salad is bursting with color and features tasty veggies and other ingredients that will keep you fueled all day.

pasta-salad-1

The great thing about this pasta salad is that you can really add whatever you’d like – but remember – we eat with our eyes!  EAT THE RAINBOW, PEOPLE!

Summer Pasta Salad

Ingredients:

  • 1 box bowtie pasta
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • Small yellow tomatoes
  • 10 strips bacon, cooked and chopped into small pieces
  • 1 head broccoli, florets cut off
  • ½ red onion, chopped into small pieces
  • 1 container small mozzarella cheese pearls
  • 2 small cans black olives, sliced
  • Salt and pepper
  • Good quality olive oil

Instructions:

Prepare pasta following the package directions.  While the pasta cooks, prepare the rest of your ingredients.

pasta-salad-3

Once the pasta is cooked, drain it completely and run it under cold water to stop the cooking and cool off your pasta so your cheese doesn’t melt.  Pour the cooled pasta into a large bowl.

Then just add all your ingredients and mix it together!  Salt and pepper to taste and drizzle with good olive oil.

Like most pasta salad, this gets better as it sits in the fridge and the flavors marinate.

Feel free to mix up the ingredients to whatever you fancy…but try to get a good selection of color to make your salad all the more appetizing!

Before the Fall Book Review

I love me a good survival story.  Whether it’s surviving a zombie apocalypse, traveling the Alaskan territories, or hiking the Amazon trail, I get such a high from humans beating all the odds to ensure their own survival.

Why?  I have no idea.  I guess subconsciously I desire to go on my own daring adventures…risking the elements and taking my body to the limit in the face of ultimate danger.  So far, camping in a park is about as rugged as I’ve gotten…but there’s still time!

Recently I went on a little trip to visit my alma mater and, since it’s about a 7 hour drive up to Marquette, MI, I stopped at my library to pick up a story to listen to on the way.  I knew it would have to be something that would keep me interested during those looooooong hours driving up through Wisconsin…so I needed something exciting, enticing, and engaging…

TO THE THRILLER SECTION I WENT!

Since I’d be driving by myself through the backwoods of Michigan, I didn’t want anything too scary, so I settled on a story about a plane crash called Before the Fall.

26245850

Little did I know that this would turn out to be such a gem in the realm of survival fiction…told with such fluidity and honesty that I completely found myself engrossed in this amazing tale of strength and the human condition.

On a foggy summer night, eleven people board a small plane departing Martha’s Vineyard, heading for New York.  Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the plane crashes into the ocean and most of the passengers disappear.  The only survivors are a down-on-his-luck painter named Scott Burrows and a young four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of a wealthy and powerful family.

With chapters that weave between the aftermath of the tragedy and the backstories of the passengers and crew members, the reasons behind the accident begin to unfold…and as the media frenzy spirals out of control with false accusations and media outrage, the fragile relationship between the two survivors begins to grow and blossom…and truly is the beating heart of this story.

A unique POV story that gives almost every character a moment in the spotlight, Before the Fall aims to highlight the life of each passenger before they boarded that small plane from Martha’s Vineyard.  It puts into perspective how small events in their lives lead them to the pinnacle moment where most of them perished…and also highlights why Scott, a man who wasn’t even supposed to be on the plane at all, was one of the only ones to survive the horrific accident.

A bittersweet and tragic story about fate and human nature, Before the Fall is a spot-on novel about what humans – and the media – will do to survive.

Delia Deetz’s Mini Beetlejuice Statues

Some couples bond over their shared love of fine dining…others bond over their love of books or art.  Some bond over similar political or social views…and still others bond over a mutual love of sports or travel.  And still some, like my husband and myself, bond over a love of the ghost with the most…

beetlejuice-statue

While it actually was a love of theater that originally brought us together, it was our mutual love of Beetlejuice that cemented the fact that we were meant to be.  Besides the fact that my husband does the BEST (the BEST) impression of Beetlejuice, our joint love of Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara has further proven that our lives would just be one dark room without the other!

Let’s just drive the point home a little further by saying that we even went to the town where Beetlejuice was filmed on our most recent road trip!  Needless to say it’s a bit run down and the amazing Deetz house is no longer there, but it was still magical just to be in the town where it happened!

east-cornith

Here’s where we think they built the bridge where the Maitland’s had their accident that ultimately killed them.

15095517_10101585210203247_5357151240183462742_n

The possible location of the Deetz house!

We even ran into Beetlejuice on our most recent trip to Universal Studios for my sister’s bachelorette party!  I almost peed myself with excitement:

16473735_10154937770125979_24357704144098433_n

Clearly I have a problem…

And if you’ve spent any time on the Internet these last several months or so, you may have heard the rumors about a possible sequel to Beetlejuice in the near future…I will not comment to much on this (I HATE THIS IDEA), but let’s just say I’ve been feeling nostalgic about this amazing cult movie and decided to add a little Deetz culture to our own home.

beetlejuice-statue5

Remember these?  They’re the sculptures Delia Deetz made that later came to life during the séance they had to bring the Maitland’s back from the dead.  While my versions are MUCH smaller than the original, I still think they add a little charm to our home!

Delia Deetz’s Mini Beetlejuice Statues

Materials:

  • Stone-Colored Clay
  • Gold Clay
  • Clay Roller
  • Large Ball Tool
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Quick-Dry Tacky Glue

Instructions:

For the leaf claw statue, I rolled the stone-colored clay into a leaf shape.  I used most of the block for the leaf, setting aside about a 1 in. ball for the base.

To make the prongs, I just pinched the sides of the leaf and gently molded them into spikes.  I did the same for the base, pulling a small amount into a tab to be inserted into the base.

For the base of the statue, I just made a square and used a knife to cut a hole for the tab on the top part of the statue.  Bake these pieces separately…you’ll assemble them once they’ve been baked.

beetlejuice-statue1

For the round square statue, I divided the gold clay into two portions, with one portion slightly larger.  Reserve a tiny amount for the neck and feeler on the head.  With the smaller portion, make the square.  With the larger portion, make the head…first forming the clay into a ball then elongating it slightly into an egg shape.

beetlejuice-statue2

The neck was made with the small reserved portion and I attached it to both pieces using a large ball tool to smooth out the clay.  The antenna was also made using the small reserve and attached to the head with the ball tool.

Transfer all pieces to a baking sheet (you can cover the sheet with aluminum foil or just have a sheet that you devote to clay baking, which is what I do!).

To keep the antenna up while baking, use aluminum foil to hold it in place.  Bake your pieces following the instructions on your clay…most likely a 275 degree oven for about 20 minutes.

beetlejuice-statue3

Once baked, remove from oven and let cool completely!

Once completely cool, remove aluminum foil from round square statue.  Place tacky glue in slot of square base and insert leaf statue into base.  Let dry.

beetlejuice-statue4

And there you have it!  Hopefully these little buggers won’t come to life in the night…

Daytripper Book Review

I picked up Daytripper on a whim.  I was looking for a new graphic novel to read and was just browsing through the small, yet substantial, graphic novel section of my local library.  I noticed the cover of Daytripper and was slightly intrigued.  I thumbed through it and the illustrations alone sucked me in.  When I got home and started reading, I had no idea what I was getting myself into…and little did I know I was about to embark on a book that would overwhelm me in every way possible.

After I read Daytripper, I just sat in my living room and cried.  I cried my bloody eyes out.  I went back and thumbed through it again, then cried some more.  It wasn’t that it was sad…it was just so beautiful, so profound.  On the surface level, it is a story about death…but if you really dig in deep, it’s so much more than that.  It’s a story about choices, about deciding to stay or go.  It’s a story about moments, about those events that change and shape your life, and those quiet intimate seconds you share with a loved one.  It’s a story about beginnings and endings and all the moments in between that help shape and mold us into who we are.

daytripper-book-review

The birth of Bras de Oliva Domingos was a miracle in and of itself.  The son of a famous Brazilian writer, Bras was born in the middle of a blackout and somehow survived.  Now, as a young adult, Bras is an inspiring writer himself, spending his days writing obituaries for the local paper…trying to find the moments, tell the stories, that made these people who they were while his story has barley just begun.

Throughout Daytripper, Bras tries to figure out his own stories…tries to piece together the moments that have helped shape his life.  Each chapter introduces us to someone important in Bras’s life, then ends with Bras’s death.  Each death comes about differently as a result of a choice Bras made.  Each chapter begs the question, “What is life and how, in death, is life valued?”.

This amazing story is accompanied with stunning watercolor illustrations, made to give you the feeling of moving through a dream.  A somewhat quiet comic with little dialogue, Daytripper relies on subtle glances, soft hugs, quiet moments to help tell the story.  It’s a lyrical, emotional and visual journey that uses those intimate moments to ask the big questions.

The message of Daytripper lies in the answer to a question we’ve all asked ourselves at one point:  What are the most important days of your life?  Is it the moment you’re born?  Is it when you meet your first love?  When you have your first kiss?  When you see your child in your arms?  When you finally find your dream job?  Or maybe the most important days are the days where nothing happens…when you see a bird in a tree or feel fresh rain on your face.  Maybe the important days are the ones you spend sitting on the couch with your loved one or just playing in the park with your dog.

Like all the best stories, Daytripper is a story about stories…about beginnings and endings.  It’s about choices, big and small, that shape us, mold us, create us.

Perhaps the best way to sum up Daytripper is with this interaction between young Bras and his father, taken from the book itself:

34 Fun Facts About The Office

The Office is one of the first shows I remember watching religiously when it was on TV.  Every Thursday night, I’d make dinner, turn my phone on silent, and tune into NBC to catch The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Outsourced (remember that one!?).

After the seasons came out on DVD, I bought them all (Black Friday Deal!) and I’ve easily watched the series a good three or four times now.  I still laugh at the stapler in the Jell-O…still cry when Jim and Pam get married…and my heart still breaks for Dwight after he kills Angela’s cat.

The thing I loved the most about The Office was that the characters were real…they were relatable and flawed.  I loved Michael Scott because I had a boss just like him.  I had friends who had a relationship very similar to Jim and Pam…and of course, every office has at least one Creed!

fun-facts-about-the-office

The actors on the show were so invested in its success that several went on to be writers, directors, and producers for later Office episodes…and if you follow the cast on Instagram or Twitter, you can tell how much they STILL love each other (can we just talk about the fact that Jenna Fisher and Angela Kinsey are real-life BFF’s and Jenna still wears the ring that Jim got for Pam!!  OMG WITH THIS, YOU GUYS!!).

If you miss the Dunder Mifflin crew as much as I do, here are 34 Fun Facts about The Office that will make you feel all the warm fuzzies!

34 Fun Facts About The Office

Though Ricky Gervais made fun of the American version of The Office time and time again, he and fellow The Office UK creator Stephen Merchant actually helped creator Greg Daniels write the pilot of the American version.  Gervais also played one of the people interviewing for Michael Scott’s job after Michael leaves.

The initial team of writers for The Office included four cast members:  Mindy Kaling (Kelly Kapoor), B.J. Novak (Ryan Howard), Paul Lieberstein (Toby Flenderson), Mike Schur (Dwight’s cousin, Mose) and Greg Daniels.

Mindy Kaling was hired on for The Office after Greg Daniels saw her perform her two-woman show, Matt & Ben (about Matt Damon and Ben Affleck) with her roommate.  You can read all about this amazing experience in Kaling’s book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?.

Mindy’s roommate, Brenda Withers, actually made a cameo in the “Booze Cruise” episode as corporate representative, Brenda Matlowe.

Producers originally wanted John Krasinski to read for Dwight…but Krasinski felt Jim Halpert was a better fit for him.  He turned down the option to read for Dwight and told producers, “If you can’t find a Jim, I’ll come in and read for that.”  THANK GOD!

tv funny the office like follow me GIF

YOU GUYS – When Krasinski got the part of Jim, the first thing he asked was if Jenna Fisher got the part of Pam.  When Fisher got the part of Pam, the first thing she asked was if Krazinski got the part of Jim.  MY HEART!!

Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad) actually auditioned for the part of Michael Scott.  He was originally cast, but was obviously beat out by Steve Carell when Carell’s other project fell apart, but Odenkirk would make a guest appearance later on in season 9 as the “Michael Scott” of the office where Pam interviews.

Krasinski and Novak played little league together as kids and also knew each other in high school.

Ed Helms (Andy Bernard) and Brian Baumgartner (Kevin Malone) also attended high school together in Georgia.

Phyllis Smith (Phyllis Lapin-Vance) was actually working as a casting associate on the show and would read lines with actors.  At one point, producers asked her to do some more reading and she had no idea she was actually auditioning for the part that was created specifically for her.

Creed Bratton’s name is actually Creed Bratton IRL.  He was also a musician in the band, The Grass Roots.

Steve Carell has written two episodes of The Office: “Casino Night” and “Survivor Man”.

Carell actually won a Writer’s Guild of America Award for “Casino Night” (also known as the one where Pam and Jim kiss!).

Michael Scott’s kiss with Oscar in “Gay Witch Hunt” was actually improvised by Carell.  The shocked faces of the cast were real reactions.

Angela Kinsey (Angela Martin) was working at 1-800-DENTIST when she was cast on the show.  Anything is possible, you guys!

Not only are Fisher and Martin BFF’s in real life and have Target shopping dates together, Fisher is also godmother of Kinsey’s daughter, Isabel.

Paul Giamatti was NBC’s first choice to play Michael Scott; he turned down the role.  Good thing, or else we wouldn’t have this magical moment:

The paper that is highlighted during the opening credits of The Office is actually a Los Angeles Department of City Planning document.

After season 1 of The Office, reviews were mixed and the show was facing cancellation.  It was Carell’s film, The 40-Year-Old Virgin that shot Carell into stardom and ended up saving the show.

Although Dunder Mifflin is a fictitious company, it is recognized by the Scranton Chamber of Commerce because of all the tourism it has given to the city.  Quill.com also sells Dunder Mifflin-branded paper.

In the episode, “Basketball”, Daryl mentioned that the winner of the basketball game gets “dinner at Farley’s”.  Farley’s was an actual restaurant in Scranton and had a Michael Scott burger on their menu.

The Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin is located at 1725 Slough Avenue.  That’s not a real street in Scranton, PA, though it is a reference to the UK version of the show, which takes place in Slough, England.  CLEVER!

The computers on set really worked.  Cast members would surf the web and play games during filming, which helped the cast feel like they were in a real office.
