10 Books to Read if You Love The Princess Bride

The Princess Bride, William Goldman
Granted, the book is slightly different from the film, but chances are if you love the movie, you’re gonna love the book…at least give it a try for Prince Humperdinck alone!

As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride, Cary Elwes
Well, this is just a no-brainer. Written by Cary Elwes (Westley), As You Wish explores the making and production of The Princess Bride film, complete with behind-the-scene stories and memories from the entire cast.

Stardust, Neil Gaiman
Take a journey into a magical land as a young boy pursues his one true love. Sound familiar? This charming story features the adventure and humor that make The Princess Bride so wonderful, as well as a little romance!

The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle
This fantastical quest of concealed identity is the perfect book to cozy up with if you love The Princess Bride. The Last Unicorn was also made into a wonderfully cheesy movie if you’d rather indulge in the story that way.

The Thousand Autumns, Jacob de Zoet
The strength of true love, the power of faith, the thrill of the adventure…it’s all here in The Thousand Autumns by Jacob de Zoet.

Candide, Voltaire
Pirates? Check. Exciting adventures? Check. Love and revenge? Check and check. Candide is a breathless tour of far off lands and the quest for true love.

Ivanhoe, Sir Walter Scott
Ivanhoe may not have the wit and sarcasm of The Princess Bride, but it sure packs in the romance.

Guenevere: Queen of the Summer Country, Rosalind Miles
Guenevere is a romantic and heart-wrenching narrative, complete with all the pageantry, politics, war, lust, love, and conflict the Brits so gallantly require in their legends. A fairy tale likened to Buttercup’s adventures, Guenevere is sure to appease lovers of the King Arthur legends and romantic fairy tales.

Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
If you love Buttercup’s wit and sass, chances are you’re gonna fall in love with Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice. A story about romance, love, and a fun-loving sarcastic leading lady, Pride and Prejudice is one swashbuckling pirate away from The Princess Bride.

The Book of Lost Things, John Connolly
A fantastic book filled with epic adventures, lots of magical heroes and monsters, and travels in far off lands, The Book of Lost Things is maybe one of my favorite novels of all time. While it lacks the romance of The Princess Bride, it makes up for it in amazing characters and harrowing journeys.

As You Wish: The Cast of The Princess Bride – Where Are They Now

You may not know it, but chances are you’ve seen and heard the cast of The Princess Bride in recent movies and TV shows.  Toy Story, Gossip Girl, The Nightmare Before Christmas, House of Cards, Homeland, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Mascots, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia were all brought to you by someone who appeared in The Princess Bride…and today, we’re gonna take a look and see what’s become of Westley, Prince Humperdink, and the lovely Princess Buttercup.

Though some of the cast is no longer with us (RIP, Fezzik!), the majority of the characters you know and love are still alive and doing well…so, without further ado…

The Cast of The Princess Bride: Where Are They Now?

Cary Elwes
Westley
cary elwes the princess bride as you wish GIF
Though he was in some small films before being cast as Westley, it was The Princess Bride that really put Cary Elwes on the map…at least in America.  A British actor who gave a beautiful face to the swashbuckling love interest of Princess Buttercup, Elwes made a name for himself with his breakout role, working steadily after TPB wrapped filming.  He had roles in Glory, Hot Shots!, and of course Robin Hood: Men in Tights.  He also worked on Twister, Liar Liar, and Ella Enchanted.

He’s continued to work actively in film and TV and recently released a book titled As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride about the filming and production of the movie.  He has three movies due for release in 2017.

Robin Wright
Princess Buttercup
 the princess bride GIF
A soap opera actress by trade, Robin Wright’s film debut was The Princess Bride.  Not bad landing a leading role for your first film!  After starring as the most beautiful woman in the world, Wright went on to star in Forrest Gump, Message in a Bottle, Unbreakable, Moneyball, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and – most recently – the 2017 film, Wonder Woman.

Wright can also be seen as the calculating love-to-hate powerhouse politician, Claire Underwood, in the Netflix series, House of Cards.

Mandy Patinkin
Inigo Montoya
the princess bride inigo montoya you killed my father GIF
Mandy Patinkin does it all.  A well-loved actor, singer, comedian, and voice artist, Patinkin has had several roles both on stage and on screen…but is perhaps best known for this role as Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride.

A graduate of Julliard, Patinkin remained active after TPB, appearing in Dick Tracy and Alien Nation.  He also had a role in the 1991 Broadway production of The Secret Garden, a role which earned him a Drama Desk Award nomination.

Patinkin can be seen now in a variety of TV shows, most recently in Criminal Minds and Homeland.  He’s also currently filming a movie titled Life Itself, due out in 2018.

Wallace Shawn
Vizzini
shocked the princess bride wallace shawn inconceivable GIF
You know his voice anywhere…Any true TPB fan can’t say ‘inconceivable!’ without the same inflection in the voice as Wallace Shawn.  After his portrayal of Vizzini in The Princess Bride, Shawn went on to appear in a variety of TV shows and movies, including Gossip Girl, Clueless, and Southland Tales.

More recently, Shawn has done a tone of voice acting, namely as Rex in the Pixar film franchise, Toy Story.  He’s also voiced characters in The Incredibles, Family Guy, BoJack Horseman, and A Goofy Movie.

Shawn can be heard alongside John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Raven Symone, Ian McKellen, Sylvester Stallone, Danny DeVito, and Patrick Warburton in the upcoming fantasy film, Animal Crackers, due for release in 2017.

Billy Crystal
Miracle Max
 the princess bride GIF
You may not have recognized him as Miracle Max in The Princess Bride, but Billy Crystal’s performance as the magical witch doctor is one of the actors favorites.  Most of his roles in the film were improvised, including his famous line, “Have fun storming the castle!”

Reiner and Crystal were no strangers before TPB, having worked together in This is Spinal Tap.  The pair worked together again after TPB in one of Crystal’s most famous movies, When Harry Met Sally.  Crystal went on to do several other blockbuster comedies, including City Slickers and Monsters Inc.

Recently Crystal has been quiet and hasn’t been seen in many movies or TV shows.  He’s released a few books and specials in the last few years and has done philanthropic work with Comic Relief and various museums in the LA area.

Chris Sarandon
Prince Humperdink
the princess bride chris sarandon prince humperdinck skip it get to the point GIF
A student of improve and the stage, Chris Sarandon got his first TV role in the series, The Guiding Light.  He acted in a handful of Broadway and Shakespearan plays before being cast as Prince Humperdink.

Almost always typecast as the villain, Sarandon went on to voice the character of Jack Skellington in the Tim Burton film, The Nightmare Before Christmas.  He’s also voiced the character for various video games and sequels.  In the 1990’s, Sarandon returned to Broadway and was most recently cast as Signor Naccarelli in the six-time Tony award-winning Broadway musical, The Light in the Piazza.

Andre the Giant
Fezzick
 the princess bride GIF
The French-born wrestler and actor, Andre the Giant, was a beast of a man.  Known as “The Eighth Wonder of the World”, Andre only had a handful of other acting gigs after his personal favorite role of his career, Fezzick in The Princess Bride.

Due to his gigantism and years of wrestling, Andre suffered severe health problems throughout his later years and he died in his sleep of congestive heart failure in January 1993.

A beloved cast member who was loved by both fans and fellow cast mates, Andre’s legacy and performance in TPB is still talked about fondly to this day.

Christopher Guest
Count Rugen
trap the princess bride christopher guest its a trap count rugen GIF
The infamous “Six-Fingered Man” may not have been that funny in the film, but the actor who played Inigo Montoya’s nemesis, Count Rugen, is the same hilarious mind behind such classics as This is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and the new Netflix film, Masots.

A trained actor and musician, Guest’s big break came with Rob Reiner on the film, This is Spinal Tap.  He also went on to perform on SNL before working with Reiner again in The Princess Bride.  After his work on TPB, Guest would go on to make a series of improvised films, mostly starring the same improv group made up of Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Michael McKean, Parker Posey, Bob Balaban, Jane Lynch, Jennifer Collidge, and Fred Willard.  Guest appears in several of his films, and has also acted in A Few Good Men and The Invention of Lying.  Currently, Guest is a member of the band, The Beyman Bros and can be seen in the Netflix special, Mascots (also starring many of his improv buddies!).  Guest is married to actress Jamie Lee Curtis and they have two adopted children.

Carol Kane
Valerie
the princess bride liar lying alt facts GIF
Best known for her role as Simka Dahblitz-Gravas on the TV series, Taxi, Carol Kane is a respected lady of comedy.  She earned two Emmy Awards for her work on Taxi and was a regular on the NBC series, All is Forgiven.

After her performance as Valerie, the wife of Miracle Max in The Princess Bride, Kane went on to appear in a handful of other TV sitcoms, as well as a few films, including Scrooged and Man on the Moon.  She was nominated for an Oscar for her work on Hester Street and also won appraise for her starring role in the off-Broadway  play, Love, Loss, and What I Wore in 2010.

From 2005 to 2014, Kane portrayed the evil headmistress Madame Morrible in the Broadway musical, Wicked and has continued to star in the role for various other renditions and performances.

Kane can currently be seen in the Netflix series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Fred Savage
The Grandson
kissing the princess bride fred savage GIF
No stranger to the big screen, Fred Savage was in a handful of movies and TV shows before his performance as the sick grandson in The Princess Bride.  The year following filming of TPB, Savage was cast in the role that would define his career: Kevin Arnold in The Wonder Years.  He remained on the show until it ended in 1993.

Currently Savage has been working as a producer for several episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Friends with Benefits, and Happy Endings.

Peter Falk
The Grandfather
tv reactions books reading the princess bride GIF
Perhaps best known as Columbo, Peter Falk was a star in his own right before his cameo as the grandfather in The Princess Bride.  A veteran of stage and screen, Falk had most of his commercial success before filming TPB.  After The Princess Bride, Falk had a handful of other performances in film and TV and even returned to the stage for an off-Broadway production of Arthur Miller’s Mr. Peters’ Connections.

Falk passed away in June of 2011, after a battle with pneumonia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Mel Smith
The Albino
 princess bride albino GIF
A graduate of Oxford University, Mel Smith got his start on stage, acting with the Oxford University Dramatic Society.  He also appeared in various BBC series, as well as the Marx Brothers film, A Night at the Opera.

After his performance as the torture-loving albino in The Princess Bride, Smith directed the 1989 film, The Tall Guy, which helped put fellow British actor, Emma Thompson, on the map.

In 2006, Smith returned to the stage, appearing in the play, Allegiance.  The following year he played the role of Wilbur Turnblad in the London production of Hairspray, which ran from October 2007 to January 2008.

Smith passed away from a heart attack in July 2013.

Peter Cook
Clergyman
marriage the princess bride mel brooks GIF
Coined “the father of modern satire”, Peter Cook was ranked number one in the Comedians’ Comedian, a poll of more than 300 comics, comedy writers, producers and directors throughout the English-speaking world.  He was a celebrated actor, writer, director, and host, appearing in various TV specials, films, stage performances, and even hosted SNL during the first season of the show.

Cook passed away in January 1995.

The Princess Bride Coasters

Materials:

Instructions:

First, paint your coasters.  These are just painted with one coat of paint.  You can add another coat for a richer color, but I just stopped after 1 coat.

princess-bride-coasters3

Cut out your images.  I edited mine using a photo editing software to be a 3 in. x 3 in. square.

Paint a LIGHT coat of Mod Podge on your coaster.  Adhere the image.  Paint over with Mod Podge to secure.  You can cover the entire coaster with Mod Podge to protect the paint layer, too.

If desired, add felt feet on bottom of coaster.

Pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy watching The Princess Bride!

Princess Buttercup Cupcakes with “Anybody want a Peanut?” Butter Filling

I know I’ve said it before, but The Princess Bride is easily one of my all-time favorite movies.  It’s my go-to when I’m sick…but I’d really watch it anytime, anywhere.  Wanna come over for a movie night?  Chances are that’ll be my suggestion…and don’t worry, I won’t quote the movie to you, I promise!

the princess bride liar lying alt facts GIF

OK, I might quote a few things…

The Princess Bride is celebrating its 30th anniversary this September and, to celebrate, I thought we’d have some fun this week and honor The Princess Bride with all kinds of fun recipes, crafts, and activities!

trap the princess bride christopher guest its a trap count rugen GIF

NO!!  IT’S FOR REAL!!

To get started, I wanted to make a treat that played to the romance and the whimsy of The Princess Bride, while still following the theme because, you know, I’m all about themes…so for today, I have a Princess Buttercup Cupcake with “Anybody want a Peanut?” Butter Filling!

And if you get all the references, well,

Topped with a royal icing buttercup flower and filled with tasty peanut butter frosting, these chocolate cupcakes are a dream come true…even dreamer than Westley’s eyes or Inigo Montoya’s sexy AF sword-fighting skills.

A great way to kick off a Princess Bride viewing party, these tasty cupcakes are INCONCEIVABLE-ly good!

peanut-butter-cupcakes7

Princess Buttercup Cupcakes with “Anybody want a Peanut?” Butter Filling

Ingredients:

  • Meringue Powder
  • 4 cups Confectioners’ Sugar
  • Color Right Performance Color System, or Yellow Food Coloring
  • Chocolate Cake Mix
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (optional)
  • Peanut Butter Frosting
  • Whipped White Vanilla Frosting

Tools:

  • Disposable Decorating Bag
  • Petal Decorating Tip 104
  • Coupler (optional)
  • No. 7 Flower Nail
  • Wax Paper Squares
  • Cake Board or Cookie Sheet
  • Muffin Pan
  • Standard Baking Cups
  • Star Decorating Tip 1M

Instructions:

Since your buttercup flowers will have to set up in the freezer, make these one day in advance.  Using the meringue powder, make royal icing.  I followed the instructions on wilton.com for Royal Icing, combining 3 tablespoons meringue powder, confectioners’ sugar, and 4 tablespoons warm water.  Mix for at least 7 to 10 minutes, until your icing is thick and white, like this:

peanut-butter-cupcakes2

To color my icing, I used the Color Right Performance Color System, combining 10 drops YELLOW and 2 drops ORANGE.  You can also create your own yellow icing using food coloring or whatever you have available.

peanut-butter-cupcakes1

Remember that royal icing also dries quickly, so keep your bowl of icing covered with a wet paper towel when not using.

Prepare decorating bag with coupler and tip 104.  Technically, a coupler is not NEEDED for this, but I like using one, as it offers more support for my tip.  Using the flower nail and the wax paper squares, begin piping flowers.  I just made 6 to 7 petals of varying sizes.  Transfer flowers on wax paper to cake board or cookie sheet.  Don’t forget to make extras in case any flowers break!  Freeze flowers for at least 8 to 10 hours.

Bake your cupcakes following the package instructions.  To give your cakes a bakery taste, you can add a little teaspoon of GOOD vanilla extract to the batter, but it’s not essential.  Bake your cupcakes in cupcake liners.

Once your cupcakes have cooled completely, use the large side of tip 1M to remove the center from each cupcake:

peanut-butter-cupcakes4

Consume the centers as you finish!  😉  This is a very important step, you guys…you must test your baking…for science.

Prepare decorating bag with peanut butter frosting, trying not to eat it right out of the container as you go.  I didn’t use a tip for this, just cut a small hole in the tip of the bag, but you can easily use a round tip of any size if you want.  Fill in the centers with the peanut butter frosting:

peanut-butter-cupcakes5

To pipe the frosting on top, I just used the tip 1M since I had it out, but you could use whatever large tip you’d like.  Pipe a swirl on each cupcake, then top with a flower.

And there you have it!  Princess Buttercup Cupcakes with (Anybody want a Peanut?)Butter Filling!

25 of the Best Celeb-ographies I’ve Read So Far

For me, there’s no better beach read than a juicy celebrity biography…and lord knows I’ve read my fair share.  My brain seems to be packed with useless information about Russell Brand’s childhood, Carol Burnett’s seriously amazing friendship squad, and amazing life advice from Nick Offerman.  I don’t know what it is, but taking a look behind the curtain and seeing what these stars are like IRL just gives me a sense of comfort…especially since I will only read bios on the people I actually like!

Over the years I’ve read bios by and about everyone from Sammy Davis, Jr. to Bryan Cranston…and I’ve collected 25 of my favorites right here.  Need a new beach read this summer?  This is the perfect place to start!

25 of the Best Celeb-ographies I’ve Read So Far

celebrity-bios

In Black and White: The Life of Sammy Davis, Jr.
Wil Haygood

31ZNT472EJL._SX317_BO1,204,203,200_\

An intimate look at a man who defined entertainment, this biography is one of the first I remember reading and thoroughly enjoying.  Sammy Davis, Jr. was a man who lived and breathed music and dance, and In Black and White is an amazing testament to the legacy he’s left behind.

Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography
David Michaelis

ceb1162d49295ca9c12f552a5d66064f

It should come as no surprise that Charles Schulz, the man behind Charlie Brown and friends, was a bit of a loner.  A raw and emotional story about the man who gave the world one of the best comic strips ever written, Schulz and Peanuts is also peppered with cartoons and illustrations to help his story come to life.

The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee
Sarah Silverman

98bcae593363d6f0624bf915a24b66c1

Any fan of Sarah Silverman will love this book.  Told in her voice with her raw sense of humor, The Bedwetter is an inspirational story about following your dreams, standing up for yourself, and conquering your fears.

Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain
Portia De Rossi

7980df254bcbd80fa6353b93753d79f3

In Unbearable Lightness, Portia De Rossi opens up about her struggles with anorexia and body image issues, as well as her journey to acceptance and love.  This one is emotional, guys…but very uplifting.

Good Stuff: A Reminiscence of My Father, Cary Grant
Jennifer Grant

90524becf46428681b076ed6efbfcab5

A short and sweet book packed with personal stories and family photos, Good Stuff gives readers a look at a man the world rarely got to see.  Though Cary Grant was one of the most famous actors of his generation, he was actually quite reserved…and this story of his life at home will have you loving him all the more.

My Booky Wook: A Memoir of Sex, Drugs, and Stand-Up
Russell Brand

6d47365fdc9f1c6fbde587c656a632e0

I gotta say, I loved this more than I thought I would.  Packed with hilarious stories of growing up in the U.K., My Booky Wook is everything you expect it to be and nothing more.  A quick read that’s perfect for summer, My Booky Wook might help explain, just a little, the insanity that is Russell Brand.

Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly
Anthony Bourdain

c28b0e26394e6bad313650f800ffc1ce

A mesmerizing look into the world of the culinary arts, Kitchen Confidential will open your eyes to the seedy, dirty, and terrifying world of restaurant chefs.  Where they eat, how they eat, and what really happens when you send your food back…it’s all here in black and white…and will forever change the way you order food next time you dine out.

Seriously…I’m Kidding
Ellen DeGeneres

66d2c0d011920f695e17ded2e4ad2a8f

Love, love, love this book.  Ellen is everything you want her to be and this book is like having her right there in your living room with you.  An inspirational story about a woman who helped fuel the LGBT movement, Seriously…I’m Kidding will have you laughing, crying, and dancing for joy.

Choose Your Own Autobiography
Neil Patrick Harris

20170296

Written in a fun choose your own adventure format, NPH’s autobiography is a fun and comic take on NPH’s rise to fame.  Filled with hilarious stories, cute drawings, and plenty of twists and turns, Choose Your Own Autobiography is everything you want in a beach read.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)
Mindy Kaling

b773c9d4f25e769d1c58573261ea9f63

I think Mindy and I are destined to be BFF’s.  A book for girls who love eating, laughing, drinking, and then eating again, reading Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? also requires a glass of wine, a platter of cheese fries, and a Netflix subscription…because you’re gonna want to start watching The Office all over again.

The Bassoon King: My Life in Art, Faith, and Idiocy
Rainn Wilson

4f650b5504a7e7607388d4483ad1f2d5

And if Mindy’s book doesn’t convince you to revisit Dunder Mifflin, The Bassoon King surely will.  With a forward by Dwight Schrute himself, The Bassoon King will make you fall in love with Rainn Wilson all the more.

As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride
Cary Elwes

ebed1a1ba58d3f5c7be5ee276db32ad5

OK so this isn’t a BIOGRAPHY so to speak, but I couldn’t leave it off this list!  A MUST for anyone who loves the movie, As You Wish takes readers behind the scenes, giving them a glimpse into the making of the most romantic story of all time.  There are also personal stories from Fred Savage, Robin Wright, Billy Crystal and many more about filming, production, and casting.

It’s a Long Story: My Life
Willie Nelson

e862825b3a9cecd69bf92b321c5c0fdf

I didn’t know much about Willie before reading this book, but I just found it so enjoyable and warm.  I actually listened to this book on tape, so there were moments when I heard Willie playing in the background, which I think made me like this book even more.  A very personal look into a life that was torn, rebuilt, and torn again, It’s a Long Story makes it easy to understand just how much Willie Nelson has influenced the music industry.

Is You Okay?
Glozell Green

9e2aae0137d0660a822b7a8ac9728ba3

Glozell, a self-proclaimed internet-tainer, has taken YouTube by storm with her various “challenge” videos.  She rose to amazing success after posting her “Cinnamon Challenge” video and has created many more since then.  She comes across as a bit of a loon online, but in reality, she’s quite the go-getter…and this book was surprisingly inspirational and motivating, especially for young girls just starting on their career paths.

Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars
Scotty Bowers

68960e32bf977e81c2f2dbf6b00bb55c

Hahahahahaha, I can’t think of this book without laughing.  So insanely ridiculous in nature, Full Service is a story about the sex lives of the Hollywood stars we know and love.  While some of these stories seem absolutely insane, others could be quite plausible…and as Bowers says himself, there’s really no way to know, as most of the celebrities in this book are now dead.  Even if it’s all fake, Full Service certainly is the ultimate beach read and is attune to reading a long, juicy, trashy magazine.

A Little Bit Wicked: Life, Love, and Faith in Stages
Kristin Chenoweth

61cdbeeaff9486adcdcf89cec2ed88a7

You might know her from Wicked, Pushing Daisies, Glee, or just from her work on Broadway…but this little pint-sized star packs a serious punch…and the stories of her rise to fame are so inspiring that you may find yourself singing “Defying Gravity” as you read it.

Jimmy Stewart: A Biography
Marc Eliot

51Zruhq+tkL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_

The thing I love most about Jimmy Stewart is that he is everything you want him to be.  Kind, good-hearted, genuine, classy…he was all of those things and more.  A sweet book to give to dad or grandpa for Father’s Day, Stewart’s biography truly showcases a wonderful life.

Yes Please
Amy Poehler

yesplease

If you were to take The Magic Schoolbus into the mind of Amy Poehler, it would look like the pages of Yes Please.  A book you could easily read in a few hours, Yes Please is like a scrapbook of Poehler’s life, told with her wit and sarcasm, and the genuine care and attention to detail of her foil, Leslie Knope.

Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man’s Fundamentals for Delicious Living
Nick Offerman

51CD8MTSM1L._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_

If Nick Offerman had his choice, this book would probably be hand-written and bound with leather and glue.  A story about growing up in rural Illinois and making a future literally by hand, Paddle Your Own Canoe is a life-lesson in creativity, romance, and manliness.  It’s most likely Ron Swanson’s favorite book, TBH.

A Life in Parts
Bryan Cranston

b541e489cb2ec7117f399f5f42f2f895

Any lover of Bryan Cranston’s work will enjoy this book.  Told in several small vignettes of characters Cranston has played in his lifetime (both personally and professionally), this book really is a life in parts.

How to Make Love Like a Porn Star
Jenna Jameson

7bc350af60b3bdd045fe6ac7a2070292

This was another book that was a total surprise.  Juicy gossip, sexy pictures, and lots (LOTS) of tips and tricks of the trade fill this beast of an autobiography.  Word to the wise…many libraries have stopped carrying this book for…reasons…so if you’re interested, invest in your own copy.

This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection
Carol Burnett

eaa7fd21947b1e0009ca236b5fbf2fb0

If you loved her then, you’ll love her now.  A sweet celebration of love and friendship, This Time Together is humorous, genuine, and – like Carol – a true treat.

My Father’s Daughter: A Memoir
Tina Sinatra

my-fathers-daughter-9781501124495_hr

Almost everyone in the world knows who Frank Sinatra was…but not many knew him the way his kids knew him.  A very emotional, raw, and empowering book about a father and a daughter, My Father’s Daughter holds no bars…opening the door to her father’s friendships, love affairs, and struggles…all told from the perspective of one of the girls who truly loved him the most.

Bossypants
Tina Fey

tina-fey-bossypants-book-cover

Let’s be honest, you’ve read this, right?  Everyone has to have read this by now…so there’s really no use explaining how amazing this is.

Home: A Memoir of My Early Years
Julie Andrews

516sXtt9mZL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_

This woman is practically perfect in every way.  An amazing singer, actor, and writer, Home is a look into the very early years of Andrews’ career…starting from childhood and ending with her boarding the plane to star in this little Disney movie called Mary Poppins.

14 Fun Facts About Ghostbusters

The idea for Ghostbusters came about thanks to Dan Aykroyd’s family history.  Growing up surrounded by spiritualists, Aykroyd was inspired to create the film after researching his father’s collection of books, including his great-grandfather’s notes and books about conducting his own séances.

The character of Peter Venkman, ironically played by Bill Murray, was originally meant for fellow SNL alum, John Belushi.  However, after Belushi’s tragic death, Aykroyd decided to cast Murray in the part instead.  Belushi’s likeness still made it into the film, though.  Aykroyd conceived a gross-looking, gluttonous, party-guy persona as a homage to his friend…and thus Slimer was born.

Additionally, Chevy Chase and Michael Keaton turned down the role of Peter Venkman.  Eddie Murphy was also supposed to be cast, but was starring in Beverly Hills Cop at the time.

Eager to work on a fun project after completing her role as Ripley Scott in Alien, Sigourney Weaver tried a unique approach to her audition for Ghostbusters.  Rather than impress the director with jokes, she decided to do a wordless scene where she turned into one of the grotesque dogs that do Gozer’s bidding.

Rick Moranis’s role as Louis Tully was originally meant for another late SNL alum, John Candy.  Candy wanted the part rewritten and turned into a major role and wanted to turn Tully into a stern German man with a thick accent.  Aykroyd vetoed the idea and the part went to Moranis.

The marshmallow goo that rains down on New York after The Marshmallow Man explodes is actually shaving cream.

Ron Jeremy was an extra in the film and later starred in a porn parody titled This Ain’t Ghostbusters XXX.

Most of Bill Murray’s lines in the film are ad-lib.

Originally, Ghostbusters was supposed to take place in the future…an idea that would come with a $300 million price tag (in the 1980’s!!).  Fellow actor Harold Ramis rewrote the script to take place in modern time and brought the budget down to about $30 million.

The original trailer for the film featured a 1-800 number.  If anyone called it, they would hear a prerecording of Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd.  The number got about 1,000 calls an hour, 24 hours a day, for 6 weeks before it was changed to a 555 number.

All the Marshmallow Man suits cost about $20,000 each (there were three made)…and were all destroyed during filming.

The jail scene in the movie was filmed in a real prison.  Aykroyd was convinced it was haunted.

The party scene with Moranis and his guests is almost entirely improvised.

Until it was beat out by Home Alone, Ghostbusters was the highest grossing comedy of all time.  In 1984, it made $240 million domestically, which equates to about $580 when adjusted for inflation.

Mini Shells with Italian Sausage, Asparagus, and Sun-Dried Tomatoes

Looking for an easy weeknight meal that the whole family will love?  Try this Mini Shells with Italian Sausage, Asparagus, and Sun-Dried Tomatoes dish.  Filled with flavor, this pasta dish uses basil pesto instead of marinara sauce and packs a little punch depending on how spicy your Italian sausage is!

sausage-pasta-and-asparagus

If you don’t like asparagus, you can easily sub it for peas or spinach…and the sausage can easily be replaced by chicken, if desired.  Though this dish is baked entirely on the stove, you could top it with some more grated cheese and pop it under the broiler for a tasty pasta casserole that is sure to make the house smell amazing.

Mini Shells with Italian Sausage, Asparagus, and Sun-Dried Tomatoes

Ingredients:

  • 1 box Mini Shells
  • ½ lb. Hot Italian Sausage
  • 5-7 Asparagus Stalks, chopped
  • 2 Cloves Garlic, minced
  • 8-10 Sun-Dried Tomatoes, chopped
  • Classico Basil Pesto (8 oz. jar)
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated (plus more for garnish)
  • ½ cup Provolone cheese, grated

Instructions:

  1. Prepare pasta following box instructions.  Once pasta is cooked, drain it and set the pasta aside.  Return the pot to the stove.
  2. In the pot, brown the sausage, using a wooden spoon to chop it up into small pieces.  Once sausage is cooked, add asparagus stalks and garlic.  Heat until garlic is fragrant, about a minute or so.
  3. Add sun-dried tomatoes and entire container of basil pesto.  Mix until pesto is hot, about another minute.  Add the pasta back into the pot.
  4. Add cheeses, reserving some Parmesan cheese for garnishing.  Remove pot from heat.  Mix everything together.  Serve immediately, topping with reserved cheese.
