13 Magical Quotes from L.M. Montgomery

I was well over 21 when I read Anne of Green Gables for the first time. Filled with flowery, beautiful language about friendship, love and nature, this series of books touched my heart in a special way…and I was actually upset with myself for not discovering it earlier on in my reading adventures.

The author of “Anne with an E”, L.M. Montgomery, filled her books with quotable passages that literary nerds could pick out of a lineup any day; however, she also had little nuggets of phraseology that so perfectly encapsulate life, love and friendship. Here are 13 of my faves!

13 Magical Quotes from L.M. Montgomery

“Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

“It’s been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will.”

“Perhaps, after all, romance did not come into one’s life with pomp and blare, like a gay knight riding down; perhaps it crept to one’s side like an old friend through quiet ways; perhaps it revealed itself in seeming prose, until some sudden shaft of illumination flung athwart its pages betrayed the rhythm and the music, perhaps . . . perhaps . . . love unfolded naturally out of a beautiful friendship, as a golden-hearted rose slipping from its green sheath.”

“Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It’s splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world.”

flowers in the dark
“I love to smell flowers in the dark,” she said. “You get hold of their soul then.”

“True friends are always together in spirit.”

“There was something in her movements that made you think she never walked but always danced.”

“Well, we all make mistakes, dear, so just put it behind you. We should regret our mistakes and learn from them, but never carry them forward into the future with us.”

“After all,” Anne had said to Marilla once, “I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string.”

“Life is worth living as long as there’s a laugh in it.”

get them
“That’s the worst of growing up, and I’m beginning to realize it. The things you wanted so much when you were a child don’t seem half so wonderful to you when you get them.”

“Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.”

21 Fun Facts about Mr. Bean

It’s not Thanksgiving or Christmas in my house until we’ve watched the Mr. Bean Christmas special.

*Yes, this IS where Friends got the idea…

The popular British sitcom which starred Rowan Atkinson as the silent comedian, “Mr. Bean”, this series consisted of just a handful of episodes, but launched Atkinson’s career into space. Not to mention it spurred two movie sequels, an animated series, and a whole assortment of merchandise.

Based on a character Atkinson developed while studying at Oxford, the series follows the exploits of the crazy Mr. Bean, described by Atkinson as “a child in a grown man’s body.” Bean rarely speaks, rather he uses physical comedy while interacting with other characters. This simple detail helped make Mr. Bean a world-wide phenomenon.

Mr. Bean has been a part of my childhood for as long as I can remember…and I STILL find myself laughing at Atkinson’s clever use of physical humor.

So if you’re a fan of this annoying, yet lovable character, grab your teddy and tuck in for these 21 Fun Facts about Mr. Bean!

21 Fun Facts about Mr. Bean

Atkinson went to school with the former Prime Minister of England, Tony Blair.

Atkinson also holds degrees from Oxford and Newcastle University (in Electrical Engineering).

Unlike Mr. Bean, Atkinson owns several cars, including a Honda Civic Hybrid, McLaren F1 and a Renault 5 GT Turbo, to name a few.

He has been friends with Prince William for years and was a guest to his wedding to Kate Middleton.

Atkinson is a huge James Bond fan and even got a supporting role in 1983’s Never Say Never Again.

The name ‘Mr. Bean’ was originally Mr. White and Mr. Cauliflower before writers and producers landed on Bean.

The birth of Mr. Bean came about after an assignment Atkinson had at Oxford. He had about 48 hours’ notice to develop a 5-minute skit, so he stood in front of a mirror and messed about with his face. Thus, Mr. Bean was born.

Though Mr. Bean only produced 14 episodes, it also spurred two movies, an animated series, a video game, some books, and a slew of merchandise, including a branded Teddy!

Since the comedy in the series is physical and not narrative, people all over the world understand and love Mr. Bean. The series was broadcast in nearly 200 countries.

Atkinson’s creative partner, Richard Curtis, helped to develop the character of Mr. Bean. Curtis would go on to place Atkinson in several of his other projects, including Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love Actually.

While developing his character, Atkinson was heavily inspired by Jacques Tati.

Atkinson often refers to Mr. Bean as “a child in a grown man’s body.” He says, “…Mr. Bean is a very, very self-contained character because he’s so sort-of introspective and so selfish and self-centered that there’s no particular need to have another person in the scene to make him funny.”

Atkinson really CAN wiggle his ears.

When London hosted the Summer Olympics in 2012, Mr. Bean was on hand for the opening ceremony, where he ushered in the games with a rendition of “Chariots of Fire”.

The Tao of Bill Murray Book Review

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I have a list of celebrities I cannot bear the thought of losing: Jeff Goldblum, Michael Keaton, Tom Hanks, Julie Andrews, Carol Burnett, Jeff Bridges, Jack Nicholson, the list goes on and on. I grew up with a lot of these actors…I mean I’ve seen so many movies with Julie Andrews and Tom Hanks that I feel like I know them on some level. But I honestly feel nothing will hurt like the pain of losing Bill Murray.

Here’s the thing about Bill Murray. You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t enjoy at least one of his movies. From Ghostbusters to Zombieland, and several before and since, Murray had racked up fans of all ages, sizes, genders, and walks of life. But why? What is it about this young kid from Illinois that appeals to movie-goers the world over?

In The Tao of Bill Murray, bestselling author Gavin Edwards tries to find out. By traveling to the places where Murray has lived, worked and partied, Edwards goes in search of the most outrageous and hilarious Bill Murray stories from the past four decades, many of which have never been reported.

But this isn’t just a collection of wacky anecdotes…The Tao of Bill Murray puts the actor’s public clowning into a larger context, analyzing the 10 guiding principles of living the Murray way of life.

Sprinkled with personal stories from fans, co-workers, and Murray himself, The Tao of Bill Murray is an intimate look into the man no one can quite pin down. It’s an attempt to find out what makes him tick, what keeps him happy, and how we, as the general public, can embrace the lifestyle that is Bill Murray.

Throughout the book, several actors, directors, fans and friends attempt to break down the formula that gave birth to this amazing actor. Jon Favreau, who directed Bill in The Jungle Book, said Bill is “…completely available when you’re in direct contact. He’s an incredibly authentic, generous person who understands who he is, what he represents to everybody. He embraces it.” I don’t think it gets truer than that.

Also covering the wide range of Murray’s filmography, The Tao of Bill Murray also entertains with behind-the-scenes stories about his work on everything up to The Jungle Book (2016). Learn about the movies he disliked (Garfield, The Life Aquatic), the movies he loved (Lost in Translation, Broken Flowers) and all the mishaps and golden opportunities that got him to where he is today.

Though we may never really understand what it is that makes Bill Murray who he is, we can all take comfort in knowing he’s out there…showing up at parties, throwing people in pools, and kissing people randomly in restaurants. Is he an Oscar-worthy actor? Perhaps not…but he’s the man Hollywood needs. As Favreau says, he’s authentic and generous…and never fails to deliver, no matter what the project. And regardless of whether you loved Murray in Rushmore, Caddyshack, Ghostbusters, or The Life Aquatic, this book is a must-read for anyone who calls themselves a Bill Murray fan – which is to say, everyone.

Pain is Information

“We are so afraid to change careers, to end relationships, to outgrow people or places – and that’s just growth. To me, choosing to go toward the cracking in order to keep expanding is the only way. The only way to get out of pain is to go through it. Pain is information.”
