13 Magical Quotes from L.M. Montgomery

I was well over 21 when I read Anne of Green Gables for the first time. Filled with flowery, beautiful language about friendship, love and nature, this series of books touched my heart in a special way…and I was actually upset with myself for not discovering it earlier on in my reading adventures.

The author of “Anne with an E”, L.M. Montgomery, filled her books with quotable passages that literary nerds could pick out of a lineup any day; however, she also had little nuggets of phraseology that so perfectly encapsulate life, love and friendship. Here are 13 of my faves!

13 Magical Quotes from L.M. Montgomery

“Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”

octobers
“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

“It’s been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will.”

rose
“Perhaps, after all, romance did not come into one’s life with pomp and blare, like a gay knight riding down; perhaps it crept to one’s side like an old friend through quiet ways; perhaps it revealed itself in seeming prose, until some sudden shaft of illumination flung athwart its pages betrayed the rhythm and the music, perhaps . . . perhaps . . . love unfolded naturally out of a beautiful friendship, as a golden-hearted rose slipping from its green sheath.”

“Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It’s splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world.”

flowers in the dark
“I love to smell flowers in the dark,” she said. “You get hold of their soul then.”

“True friends are always together in spirit.”

dancing
“There was something in her movements that made you think she never walked but always danced.”

“Well, we all make mistakes, dear, so just put it behind you. We should regret our mistakes and learn from them, but never carry them forward into the future with us.”

pearl
“After all,” Anne had said to Marilla once, “I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string.”

“Life is worth living as long as there’s a laugh in it.”

get them
“That’s the worst of growing up, and I’m beginning to realize it. The things you wanted so much when you were a child don’t seem half so wonderful to you when you get them.”

“Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.”
