What’s the Buzz?

Hey there, and welcome to The Hob-bee Hive!

First off, my name is Melissa and I am obsessed with four things:  LOST, old books, Johnny Depp, and creativity.  Phew, now that that’s out of the way…

This is a blog for the frugal and frustrated.  If you find yourself wandering aimlessly through the grocery store looking for meals you can make with one pot in your Barbie-sized kitchen, this is the place for you.  If you spend hours staring at your blank walls wondering how to add color to your life without taking the green out of the bank (or violating your lease), this is the place for you.  If you need new, crafty, and affordable home decor ideas, this is definitely the place for you.  If you are obsessed with LOST, old books, or Johnny Depp, this probably isn’t the place to be, but we should consider being friends.  🙂

As for me, I am a life-long resident of Chicago, IL.  I graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2007 and now work for a book publishing company in a suburb of Chi-Town.  I live in an apartment I can’t afford with a kitchen that’s too small and walls that are too white; however, I’m learning to adapt to my current situation by exploring just what I can do with a frying pan in one hand and a hot glue gun in the other…

So this is my mission:  I will explore easy, healthy, and tasty recipes for those of us with limited kitchen utensils and appliances.  I will add color to my apartment without giving my landlord a heart attack.  I will blog about my discoveries to tell the rest of the world how easy it is to really “design on a dime”.

I will also try to contain my excitement about LOST…but I’m not making any promises about that one…

I really hope you enjoy your stay here at The Hob-bee Hive.  Here’s hoping we all can learn something about keeping the green in the bank and the white off the walls.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  1. Hey Mel! I have been “prepping” the white (scuffed, marred, ugly, etc.) walls of my apt. for about 20 years now, wanting to get some color on them…I buy the paint, rollers, brushes, tape……then I change my mind and decide to use a different color, stroke, on and on…….how do you get to the “decisive spot” and “just do it”? I am such a detail person that I detail myself right out of my mission!

    • hahaah I have the same problem!! Sometimes you just have to wing it and go for it!! Another thing I’ve done is to sketch it out first and see what I think of it…that way I can see it on paper before committing to anything. 🙂

I was excited to find and read through your blog site! I am a mature lady that likes to learn things as often as I can…when I was a small girl my grandpa asked if I would please quit asking him about things! Still asking – just now not limiting it to my dear Papa. I have been involved in matrimony for 53 years…wedded bliss (well happiness) to my high school sweetheart…we raised 2 lovely children, 6 dogs, 2 cats ,and on occassion been host to beetles, bees, and butterflies galore. Once we hosted some albino mice that migrated to our garage from an empty field just north of our home when building began in the 1980’s. …. I have a black thumb, so I love any hints that help me grow any plant – the simpler the better … have a fixation on home decor … and am constantly working on a recipe book with rememberence story attached to them… learned to sew when I was 8 years old, water ski when I was 12, and have the last baby doll my folks bought me at age 11! I think I am a creative person and mostly use my ‘left’ brain… I am ready to get started…
